Soon after Jesus was resurrected and then ascended, it wasn't long before the disciples in whom He sent out to spread the Good News found themselves under persecution. As the centuries continued, the church did grow but with it, persecution increased, as well.

It is believed that the fish symbol represented "fishers of men," and other scripture-based likenesses. One story tells of a person who would draw the upper half of this symbol when meeting someone on the road who they thought might be a believer. The other person would then draw the lower half of the symbol to verify this notion. If, however, the second person seemed oblivious to the drawing, the first person could just wipe it away within the dirt it was written.

Whether this is a made-up story or it is true, theologians seem to disagree quite a bit. Additionally, counterparts to this theory say this symbol is rooted in paganism, and as such, could not be of God.

As for me, I can most definitely see the need for such a practice while under extreme persecution. It would be a way to speak without words, and furthermore, this could help lower the risk of being killed by haters of Jesus.

In today's world, this symbol could be used as a means to pass on information that would otherwise be tough to get your hands on; especially, after the Rapture occurs. Following the signs, like that of a fish or something else, can prove to be very useful in times such as these. After all, after the Rapture, the persecution of new and returning believers will only intensify.

I say, "Follow the Truth and become 'fishers of men', as per the orders of our Lord, Jesus Christ."
